Grafting work show ugly scars 90% of the time, devaluate a otherwise good tree, and like LB said, most of the time there are better alternatives.

Grafting fever? Nah... Just giving and knowing alternatives won´t hurt. Knowledge is never too heavy. Oh and ugly scars will be left behind only if done unwittingly or improperly.

just thought id give an update of how the tree currently looks this season. when time allows i will be chopping the tree at about 1/3 its height and creating a new apex. after mentioned from others the lack of taper along the trunk is really bothering me now.

Ouch, Crent. Nice barbecue!
How I fear from that when I’m at work, but it’ll arrive sooner or later for me also.

Guys, don't leave your maples under the direct midday sun.
They get scorched and sometimes they...
Die.
Had some fatalities last summer around here, blindly following bonsai rules (full sun, etc)
Those were rules for bonsai in Scotland or Finland, not Brazil.

mine only receives about 3 hrs of morning sun but i guess that was enough for 2 days in a row. since then it has now been protected under a mesh tarp that blocks about 75% sun.

The main problem is dry winds here. They take full sun easily when planted in the full ground. When in a pot, theydry out too easily, especially in wind.

at this point would it be smart to trim off all the burnt leaves?
