Thanks for that info Hein. I've been wondering about that and the same with regard to soil mixtures for bonsai.
I'm sorry, I have no idea what the percentage is of the ingredients...it's not listed on the bag of seed starting mix. I guess they don't want people to start making their own.

Hey there.

The acacia and boabab seeds were just planted, so the first step has been taken. When planting the seeds, how many sunlight hours should it receive? Or doesn't it matter.

How long does acacia take to sprout? I know that the boabab will take a while.

Hein,
From what I have read about acacia seeds need to have boiling water poured on them or fire to germinate.....very strange.
Keep us posted.

Hmmmm...I have learned from Nature programs on TV that many cone-baring conifers in the wild need a forest fire to sweep through before the cones can release their seeds for germination.
There are other seeds in Nature that need to freeze before they can germinate. :)

Hey everyone

2 of my acacias has germinated. When do I cut the taproot of the seedlings and how much do I cut? I saw some informal upright acacias and they took my breath away. So the first one is gonna be informal upright.

Let it grow unlimited for the first year at least. The tree needs serious energy now. Don't hamper it in any way for the first year.

I meant: Just let it grow. IF your climate is suitable, the garden is nice. However, if you polant them outside, you run the risk of the taproots shooting down. So probably a somewhat bigger container outside. Just try to not trim too much. I know acacia may have dificulties dealing with root trimming. Try to find some info (Kruger NP nursery might be able to give you some advice).

As for karma.. You will have 1 in a sec, after I post this mess :D

I just roasted a few "jack pine" Pinus banksiana cones today on the stove in a sauce pan for about 25 minutes to get the seeds, got about 12 seeds, heat or fire softens the resins in the cone, and they open right up. Ive also left cones in a plastic container in the back window of a car in the summer and the heat has opened them.

I don't know however if they need an additional cold period after being released.

One way to ensure your seedling is going to have enough sunlight to grow - only release the seeds when the rest of the forest has burned down ;)

Here is some pics of my acacia seedlings. Out of the 10 only 4 popped:(

Something is better than nothing I guess. I think the seeds might have been kept fot to long. They are about a month old now and really enjoying life
