I already did trimming on the branch about a week after i layered it, and new leaves have already sprouted. I think i should wait a while longer then. Will ficus roots go brown? Tnx for your help

Hey guys so i really couldn't wait any longer, I finally cut the ficus branch off the tree. I know I should have waited longer, but I was worried the roots would grow too long and make it hard to cut it off.

I was careful not to disturb any roots when potted it, and left the sphagnum moss on. Its really windy in Cape Town at the moment so I made sure to wire the tree to the pot :)

The tree isn't really the greatest, it has lots of parallel branches, I'm just going to let it grow for now and see what i can do with it in a year or so. :P

OK, looks healthy.

Make sur eyou place the plant out of the wind, in the shade and do NOT let the soil go dry untill the tree is clearly sprouting new leaves at several points, and/or you see the roots come through the drainage holes in the pot. I think the easiest way to ensure this is to place the plant on a large tray, and have it sit in a few cm of water. Don't worry about roots not bein able to deal with constant moisture. Ficus deal perfectly well with it, especially when it is nice and warm. Just ensure the soil is not waterlogged: It has to be loose free-draining soil.

Tnx leatherback

I put it in a sheltered place in the garden, hopefully it wont get too much wind. I used a bonsai mix soil from my local nursery, seemed pretty well draining, it has quite a bit of course grained stones. Oh and i mixed a little bit of palm peat to retain some moisture.. and the stuff looks pretty cool and nutritious.

I will have a look and see if theres anything i can use as a tray, good idea. :)

Tnx youri, another one of the air layers is ready to come off soon. I'm going to take a pic of it sometime and post it on here. Maybe someone can help me identify the tree at the same time haha
