It would really be more convenient to mark a calendar time, but it is the tree, and they don't know how to read the calendar.

One of THE MOST to the point answer I have read on this forum.

I’ve unfortunately killed junipers. But my deodar cedar and hinoki cypress are doing very well. I actually started training the hinoki cypress during this summer season without any root pruning. I only pruned the foliage—about 25% of it. I even repotted it. It has been in a shade outdoors ever since. Miraculously it is doing well. The deodar cedar had very little foliage pruning. It was wired into bunjin style and repotted without any root pruning. It’s doing very well and tolerates the California heat. You do see a lot of deodar cedars in Southern California because they’re drought and heat tolerant.
