How much distance should I put between my bonsai when planting outdoors? I have a relatively small area, but I would rather plant less plants than have them too close and their roots get tangled, assuming that would be possibly bad for all plants involved. These plants will all be small, no more than 5-7 years old.

If they are seven year old they will not be bonsai yet, but... well, no idea, really. Depends on the species, size, roots, where you're planting them...
I'd say you'd need to plant them so far apart that there's room for roots to develop without them getting entangled with the roots of their neighbours too much.

It's very possible. 'Generally, for a plant 5-7 years old their roots will extend XXX inches, you will want to leave about XXX feet between them as to not tangle their roots and cause problems in the future'. See what I did? You're a terrible representative of the bonsai community, nothing but arrogant remarks.

An ulmus parfifia Hokkaido will extend half an inch. A chestnut will extend 20 inch. Got it now?

No worries, I have developed a thick skin here. I know who is asking.

They will most likely be 2 Ficus, around 7 years old, and a Barbados Cherry between them, 5-7 years old. They will be getting direct sunlight most of the day, with some evening shade.

You can put your bonsai pots right next to eachother. HOwever, it would be best to leave some 10cm of space between crowns to keep some airflow allowing foliage to dry faster.

I am not sure how roots were to entangle. Bonsai sit in pots (pretty much the definition of bonsai)
