I like the idea of eliminating the bottom of the trunk by layering below the scar and then hollowing where the scar is. At any rate, worse case it dies and I start with something a bit more ready.

I disagree that it looks good on deciduous trees - and now I need to nuance that: it doesn't look good on many deciduous trees. On boxwood, it does work. On many others, I think it doesn't. And I am talking about deadwood, not hollow trees or uro's.

And I agree with this too! When I imagine deadwood on deciduous, I think about uros and hollowed out trunk, not Jins and sharis.

Sounds good I would do the top first to get a second tree, but this +1 year work so I understand you.
Try to find the best angle at the thickest part.

One more question for the experts here. Where do you think the graft was done? Deciding if I chop it, what I'll discover when it grows back.

I am not sure whether it was grafted. Hard to tell from the pictures you shared. Do you have a picture from the other side of the trunk? You normally see a change in bark colour/pattern/thickness. From the shown pictures there is very little bark visible, and most of it was grown over the scan and as such already different.

I'll snap a pic when I can, but I looked at the back and I don't see a change in bark unless I just don't have an eye for it. So, you may be right in that it may not be grafted. I just assumed it was because of the nasty scar, I'm not even sure how that scar happened.

Quick update for anyone interested. I figured nothing much to lose with this one. I air layered beneath the scar a while ago and now have some substantial roots coming out.

Sure thing, I didn't want to disturb the air layer too much for the pictures. So, I pulled back the plastic and took a few pictures so you can see.
