I have only just heard about being able to bonsai the Poinsettia on this thread. Although I just bought one to bonsai, it is so full of deep scarlet blooms, I can't bring myself to cut it...yet! According to the link shared by *leatherback* above, there is no mention of wiring these and is recommended only for the informal upright form. However, there is strong emphasis on how well it takes hard pruning, needs regular pruning of new growth and, how it back-buds so easily. Sounds like it is a very likely candidate for the clip-and-grow method.
I checked out the flexibility of the stems on my plant and I think one could 'try' wiring providing it is done very slowly and gradually, as one would with the Jade. More of a process of trial and error, really. Since the plants are so cheap this time of year, especially the smaller ones, I'm tempted to get a couple more to experiment with. I would love to see one of these done in a wind-swept form.
How about starting a new topic for your poinsettia?...would love to see some photos of your pruning job and it's future progress. Thanks for this tip about the sap...iick!
The only thing I don't agree with is it's recommendation to use "Miracle Grow" fertilizer...don't use it. It's not a good quality fertilizer because it forces a plant to flower continuously (which isn't healthy)while it does not provide enough sustenance for healthy root development, etc. and, it is missing much of the micro-nutrients that plants need.
Nice.
I think this is going to be a fun thread.
Since The poinsettias I am getting aren't for Christmas decorating, I think I'll wait until after the Holiday to buy them.....they will be drastically reduced in price. I love a good bargain.
I will post pictures as well
