A growth flush is VERY clear in a healthy ficus. In my Benjamina I get flushes with 30+cm (12 inches) of growth within maybe 2 weekes. The floor is litterally covered in open buds. You will see fresh soft foliage all over the tree. One or two leaves opening over a period of 4 weeks is not growing.

More mature trees will do similar things, but smaller schale (internodes closer => Less extension).

Just tonight I removed all foliage on a tigerbark in the garden: It entered a flush about a week ago, after standing in pooring rain for a couple of days, then moving into the greenhouse. In that week, each branch grew 2 new leaves.

Weather will warm up again for a feew weeks her, starting today: I hope a new flush can be triggered to get some side-branches on this '7 euro bonsai' project I started 6 months ago.

Know i get it. A 7 euro plant is quite cheap good find , a house plant from homebase (ficus benj) is £15 here and there only about 50cm. Rediculous.

Seriously?
This is one of the trees we bought to see whether mass-produced junk could be used to create a decent plant, and how much time would be needed to get to something halfway convincing. www.bonsaiempire.nl/forum/algemeen/12948...ficus-bonsai-waardig

Anyway. not here to discuss my bonsaiperiments. Maybe if I get to taking pictures I might give it a thread on this forum too this weekend.

I am glad to know that my bonsai can be repotted year round, as I have not seen it grow a lot since I bought it. I will make sure I read about root trimming and watch videos before I do so. Any reccomendations? I do not have any root pruning tools, should I get some or is there something I could use to substitute?

Also, is the pot okay, or would my tree grow better in a slightly larger pot? I know that the trunk and branches are a little thin at the moment.

For soil, at the moment I have a potting mix that contains peat, forest compost, and fertilizer in it. I also have some small gravel. Is there anything else I should put in it?

I know you can use sharp shears. Whatever you use make sure it is sharp. You need a root hook but as i cannot get one i use chopsticks as a substitute.
