Hi.

Don't go collecting yamadori material when the snow melts.

Learn about plants first. Then grow nursery plants for a few years. Only after you really know what you are doing, collect plants.

Things that do well are pines, junipers, larch, some maples. Basically every specie syou can find for groing in your garden, would be a possible bonsai subject.

Hi everyone,

I am new to the forum so it seemed like i should introduce myself to you all. My name is Aaron, I am a 23 year old graduate student (hence the profile name)from San Diego, CA. I have been working with bonsai for about 9 months now but have been reading about it for at least 2 years. My first bonsai were a juniper procumbens and a rosemary. The rosemary I thought might work out as sort of a functional bonsai that i could use the trimmings for cooking. Rosemary is also used as landscaping everywhere in southern California so i figured it would be easy to take care of. It died in about a week after potting but the juniper is alive and well and putting on a lot of new growth this spring (even if it isn't the prettiest start). There are a few Japanese maples on campus that i got permission to get some cuttings from and a few are surviving so far :) . I love everything about bonsai and they are perfect to work on and relax after a long day in lab. I look forward to learning more about them in these forums.

Hello everyone, :)

I have been a member of these forums for about 1 month, but I never saw this section until today. So I will introduce myself now :)

My name is LuLu, I am 18 years old and finishing High-school. I currently live in the United States of America, in North Carolina. I have only recently stepped into the world of Bonsai, and am learning very much from reading articles online, and from asking questions here on the forums, thanks to the vibrant and helpful community here.

My first project I have ever started is a wisteria bonsai. And I have recently added 3 Rosemary bonsai for a total of 4 plants. I'm not certain how successful they will be as these are my first attempts ever, but even if they don't survive :pinch: I believe they will provide me with valuable hands-on experience that will last a lifetime.

It is nice meeting everyone, and I look forward to continuing my quest for knowledge about the world of bonsai here. :cheer:

Hello,
I'm a scientist in my mid 30s living in Tokyo. Was born in Finland, and spent a few years in the US before moving to Japan (for the second time)...
I had a few bonsai from high school all the way through to grad school (10 or so years), but then life got too turbulent and I couldn't take care of my trees any more :(
Last new year, all of a sudden, my brother-in-law's grandpa gave me two of his bonsai, because he's getting too old to take care of them and the close relatives aren't that excited about bonsai. I rediscovered my love for bonsai, and was very happy to find this forum, too.
Below is a picture of my trees from a few months ago. One is a royagaki (persimmon/kaki that should have little fruit in the fall, but I don't know whether its male or female), and the other one is a goyomatsu (five needle pine?).
I suppose my garden will start growing, tree by tree ;)
